The hotel register was honest about everyone except the guest in 12, whose signature vanished by morning but left an indent.

Room 12 was paid in cash and occupied by a person who ate breakfast early and left no hair in the drain. The night clerk thought this was restful until he noticed the register: a signature that was present at midnight and absent at six, with a groove still pressed into the blotter underneath.
He traced the groove onto tissue. The name was a local one, belonging to a woman who had died in 1998 and whose daughter still collected the forwarded mail. The daughter did not stay in hotels. She did, however, dream of a desk she had not seen.
The clerk stopped offering room 12 without a second key. The blotter has been replaced twice. The indent, with the patience of a habit, comes back.
